Logistics / Shipping

In order to deliver the different forestry products to buyers in their countries (CFR sale condition), logistics include the contracting of a sea freight.

For them FAS has developed a very close relationship both with the shipbuilding companies, shippers (NYK, MOL) and with the most important sea freight brokers in the world.

Our uninterrupted presence in the export market, and the scale of products, make it possible to obtain short and medium-term agreements that make it possible to have competitive rates in maritime transport.

Types of vessels by product to be exported:

Woodchip carrier

These are specialized vessels for the transport of woodchips that carry all their cargo in holds and, due to the type of product, their importance is given mostly by their capacity in volume, rather than their capacity in tons.

Because of their structure, these vessels have several restrictions for different products. This is the reason why ship-owners normally require medium and long-term contracts (5 years).

These ships are contracted for full cargo, and usually go from the cargo’s port of origin to the destination port.

Bulk Carrier (logs in bulk or bundles)

All these vessels are used to transport different types of products in bulk (e.g.: grain, fertilizer, iron, coal, Clinker, logs, etc.). The difference lies in the size of the vessels and their cargo capacity. For reasons of scale and cost reduction, there is a worldwide trend to build increasingly larger vessels capable of transporting more tons of products.

Due to their structure, these types of vessels can transport different products; this is the reason for their high demand in the freight market.

In the case of transportation of wood in bulk, these vessels can carry cargo inside and outside (on top of) the holds. Therefore, it is necessary for their covers to be reinforced.

These vessels are hired for full cargo from the port of origin to the port of destination.

Vessels Types and Sizes

Container Ships:

Container ships are vessels transporting products in containers. They are used to transport all kinds of goods worldwide, including wood logs.

As in the case of bulk carriers, the size of these vessels has increased in time.

The cargo capacity of these vessels is obviously given by their size, and it is measured by the amount of TEU (number of containers) they can carry.

Currently there are vessels that can transport up to 21 000 containers. Obviously, these vessels have draft requirements.

Most container ships carry between 2000 and 10 000 TEU.

These vessels have predefined routes they constantly follow, reaching different ports, loading and unloading different types of cargo.

Unlike Chip and Bulk carriers, in these ships freight is hired per container according to their specific needs. The freight price will vary depending on the port to which the goods are shipped.
